Why Birth & Newborn Photography Make the Best Pairing

As your birth and newborn photographer, we don’t have to end the relationship after just one date! I love being a part of a family’s story in many different stages and life events. I often find that I end up capturing a family’s most precious memories through weddings, births, anniversaries and other celebrations. Here’s why I always recommend doing birth photography followed by newborn photography in celebration of your new family member!
For this particular family, we did something I normally don’t do. We captured this baby boy’s newborn session in his Lancaster, Pennsylvania home only THREE days following his birth. Usually we wait 1-2 weeks after the birth before doing the in-home newborn session. The time allows for the parents to adjust to the new life in their home and for the mom to get back on her feet following labor.
This mom requested their session sooner and I was happy to do it! It was Gianna’s 4th birth and first son so she just couldn’t wait to capture this new addition to their family alongside his sisters!

Birth & Newborn Photography: Better Together

Onyx’s home birth, quickly followed by his newborn photography again in his Lancaster, Pennsylvania home were the perfect pairing. The birth had been amazing enough on its own, but seeing him loved by his parents and excited siblings is just as beautiful to behold.
I want to remember the moments that slip away so fast into the blur of the memories of labor.
— Gianna
Birth photography can often be more so for the mom so she can remember the many moments lost in the fog of labor. As Onyx’s mom, Gianna put it: “I want to remember the moments that slip away so fast into the blur of the memories of labor.” Being Gianna’s fourth birth but first experience with a birth photographer had her excited to be able to look back on all that she went through to bring Onyx into the world. The ability of a mom to look back and reflect on her journey due to having birth photos helps with the postpartum process.

Why Newborn Sessions Are a Must

No parents that I serve regret having newborn photography following their birth because of how much their baby changes! Even at a month old, they really look quite different!
Also, I approach birth and newborn photography from two totally different angles. With a birth session, I try to act like a fly on the wall. I'm there to document all the raw and in-between moments, details that might go unnoticed as well as all the emotions the mom experiences during labor. There’s a lot you can miss because of the intensity of labor!
During a newborn home lifestyle session, our time is more interactive. I chat more with the parents guiding them through interaction with their newborn. I also move furniture and set up the space as needed to get the best light, posing, etc. in your home.

It’s Easier Than You Think

It was so natural to make this family comfortable during their newborn photo session following their birth photography only three days prior. The more we work together the better I get a sense for how to make you feel like I’m not even there! As several clients have said following their session, “That was really easy, thank you for helping us feel so comfortable!" That’s my goal!
What really made this session so special was Onyx’s three older sisters who literally surrounded him with their love and affection! The girls were somewhat timid and shy, but really sweet and easygoing. They take after their parents, who are both quiet, super kind, and warm as they become more familiar with you. We can also include your puppy like this family did if you have a pet family member too. Puppies and babies make for the cutest photos!
What also helped was the fact that it was Christmastime and their gorgeous home had all of those holiday touches. Nothing can go wrong with in-home lifestyle newborn photos because the home offers perfect lighting for a photographer!

Each Family Has Their Own Story

The more I get to know this family, the more they have become such a delight. What stood out to me about this family’s birth then newborn photography was at the end of their newborn session they poured mimosas to celebrate their baby. Gianna and Anthony wouldn't drink until I put down my camera and agreed to clink glasses and celebrate with them! I've never felt more a part of the moment!
That’s the point of newborn sessions, to capture those moments of parents with the entire family in their home just doing all that comes naturally as they welcome the baby boy or girl into the family. And if that includes your newborn photographer joining you for mimosas then count me in!
I really see birth and newborn photography as two pieces of a whole. Together, they set you up with all the memories necessary to transport you back to both the intensity of birth and the sweet calm of holding your newborn at home.
